FAQ’s
General
What should I expect when I arrive for the first time?
We’ll ask you to fill in our medical questionnaire and waiver. Please arrive at least 5 (10 if you need to use our changing rooms) minutes before the sessions to make sure you’re ready to start the class on time. Please check out our club rules too.
What do I bring to my first session?
For your first class you should bring a tight-fitting t-shirt or rash guard, and some leggings/shorts - if its a Gi class we’ll provide one free of charge for your trial class! We also recommend you bring a water bottle and sliders/flip flops to wear off the mat.
I’m a complete beginner, what will my first class be like?
We will start with a short warm-up, followed by some technique and drills. Towards the end of the class, we will do some live training; we’ll show you what this means! You can opt to watch this part of the session, but most people find this the funnest part!

For Kids
Do I have to stick to my training days?
Teaching quality and safety are our primary concern, so we must ensure we maintain a limit to our class sizes. Keeping consistent training days ensures no child misses a session because the class is fully booked.
We have a growing waitlist of students wanting to train and we want to get as many people grappling as possible without compromising on the quality we deliver! Jiu Jitsu is a sport rooted in community and we believe the more the merrier.
Can I change my training days?
Please use this link to request different training days. Accepted requests depend on class size and waitlist numbers.
Why are some Little Ones (4-6’s) classes slightly shorter?
In order to fit as many after school classes in our timetable, on Tuesdays and Thursdays the Little Ones class is 5 minutes shorter.
How do you track their progress?
Attendance (which is why booking in and showing up for class is so important).
Their attitude to training and their training partners - respect and kindness
Their willingness to learn, take part and improve
Skills they exhibit in class
We have two grading days a year - one in summer and one in winter - it doesn’t mean you definitely get graded but many do.
Our grading days are unlike other martial arts, as in its NOT a test day its more a here are the results day - we know before the grading days who will get the belt. We monitor them as they train and improve in class.
Kids: Grading
What is Grading?
Grading is a biannual event where belts and stripes are awarded by the coach directly to the pupil. The final 10 minutes of the grading class will be for photos.
How do we grade your child?
Promotions are carefully considered. The key points we take into account are: Attendance, attitude and knowledge.
Criteria
Attendance- regular attendance shows us commitment to the sport and to learning, and by showing up you will inevitably improve
Attitude- Showing a positive attitude to learning BJJ, as well as to each other - we are a team and it is important we treat each other (students, coaches) with respect and kindness at all times.
Knowledge- showing curiosity with a growing understanding and demonstration of the fundamentals of BJJ
Please note: Age is also taken into account. I.E Little Ones will progress faster through the belt system than Juniors and Teens. The older the pupil, the longer they will spend at each belt.
Reasons:
Young kids respond well to frequent milestones
Their attention and motivation benefit from visible progress
Expectations for technical depth are lower than older kids
What do stripes mean?
Stripes mark a pupil's progress towards their next belt. A maximum of 4 stripes can be awarded per belt. However, in certain circumstances, they may be promoted to the next belt without all 4 stripes.
What does a new belt mean?
The pupil has demonstrated the required knowledge for that particular belt and is able to apply this knowledge in practice.
How many belts are there?
There are 13 belts in the kids belt system, with three variations of each coloured belt.
White (x1), Grey (x3), Yellow (x3), Orange (x3) and Green (x3).
What happens at grading?
We invite all the pupils (per class) onto the mat. Each pupil will be called up to receive their stripes or belt. We encourage all pupils to attend, as it is important to support team mates and celebrate each other’s progression.
Are parents expected to attend?
Parents are welcome to attend grading. Please note, we kindly ask all parents in attendance on the mat to sit on one side of the room and remain quiet. This will be orchestrated on the day by the coaches. All pictures must be taken at the end of the class with their child alone in the photo.
Will your child always get a new belt at grading?
Not necessarily, depending on the factors mentioned in section 2, it can take around 6 months to a year to be ready for the next belt if attending class regularly.
What if a parent/child cannot make grading?
Belts can be awarded during regular class times if the pupil wasn't able to attend grading.
Does grading cost anything?
No, new belts are included in the membership.
Extra info: Booking via MAAT app
Why do we use an app booking system?
We have an app-based booking system in place to make class management easier and meet insurance requirements. The app is simple to use!
For Kids + Teens memberships:
If the member is under 16, they can use your account on their phone - they can sign into the app using your login details.
When signing up your child, use their name and DOB so we can identify them in the system.
If you are an adult member, you can create a profile for your child within your account - no need to create separate accounts.
Do I have to use the app to book?
All members must book via the app before attending a session. Walk-ins without a booking will only be allowed if space permits and must book in via the app on arrival. Attendance is one of our requirements for belt promotion. We need an accurate record of attendance so you and/or your child can be promoted appropriately.
What happens if a class is full?
You can join the waitlist in the app. If someone cancels, you’ll be notified and can take their place.
What if I need to cancel a booking?
If you can’t make a class: Please cancel your booking in the app as soon as possible. This will allow your place to be filled by someone who is on the wait list.
We understand young children can be unpredictable and so we allow cancellations up until the class begins. However, we don’t want anyone to lose out on the chance to train if there is a spot, so we appreciate you cancelling with as much notice as possible.
What if I try to cancel via the app and the app malfunctions/I do not have access?
Our new MAAT app is specifically designed to make bookings and cancellations as easy as possible. In the unlikely event there is a problem, please get in touch via email, phone or in person to let us know you have to cancel.
Should I enable notifications from the app?
Yes, we recommend allowing app notifications to receive important training updates
I need help setting things up — can I get assistance?
Absolutely! You’re welcome to stop by reception — Will or Shanti will be happy to help you set it up.
Waiting Area Policy: for kids and parents
Parents are welcome to stay in our common area during a child’s first trial class. For children aged 4–6, we understand if parents need to stay close for the first couple of lessons, please speak to a member of staff if this applies to you.
After that, parents and students must not wait in the common area during classes. As our gym continues to grow, space is limited, and keeping the area clear helps reduce distractions and noise for our students. It is a safety issue for parents and siblings to distract the kids - which is inevitable, and noise in the reception impedes the instructors capacity to retain the kids attention and for instruction to be clearly heard.
We understand some children with specialised learning needs may require a parent’s presence - please speak with us if this applies to your child. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and compassion regarding these exceptions.
Thank you for helping us maintain a positive, focused environment as we continue to grow. We’re so proud of our community and grateful for your ongoing support.
