Frequently asked questions.

What should I expect when I arrive for the first time?

We’ll ask you to scan our questionnaire and waiver via QR code, and take your medical history. You will also be required to download our booking app. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the sessions to make sure you’re ready to start the class on time. Shoes should be worn at all times when not on the mats; this is to maintain hygiene and prevent skin infections. Due to insurance requirements no jewellery can be worn during training sessions.

What do I bring to my first session?

For your first class you should bring a tight-fitting t-shirt or rash guard, and some leggings/shorts. For your first class you won’t need a Gi, but if you choose to sign up we will be happy to recommend some great brands. You should also bring a water bottle and all jewellery will need to be removed before the session.

I’m a complete beginner, what will my first class be like?

We will start with a short warm-up, followed by some technique and drills. Towards the end of the class, we will do some live training; we’ll show you what this means! You can opt to watch this part of the session, but most people find this the funnest part!

What does Fundamentals and All Levels mean?

Fundamentals cover core concepts and principles that underpin BJJ, including basic escapes, positions and submissions. All levels is open to higher levels as well as beginners, but is still open to newbees.

What happens to my membership if I get injured?

We can freeze your account and you are welcome to come watch classes during your recovery.

Can I freeze my account?

Yes for a minimum of 1 month - and then we can only freeze whole months. i.e. if you are away for 6 weeks, we can’t freeze 6 weeks, we can freeze 1 month or 2 months.

Do I have to book?

Yes via the MAAT App. If you don’t book for a session you will not be allowed admittance until you have booked via the app. Our terms and conditions outline the use of this app.

MAAT - New Booking Software FAQs

1. Why are we changing our booking system?

We’re introducing a new app-based booking system starting 1st July to make class management easier and meet insurance requirements. The app is simple to use, and you’ll no longer need to sign in at reception.

2. How do I sign up to the app?

  • Download the app here: https://maat-app.link/lmccfIM0JTb

  • Use the same email address we have on file for your membership.

  • Don’t buy anything in the app — your membership will be automatically transferred in mid-July.

🧒 For children’s memberships:

  • If the member is under 16, they can use your account on their phone.

  • When signing up your child, use their name and DOB so we can identify them in the system.

  • If you are an adult member, you can create a profile for your child within your account - no need to create separate accounts.

3. When do I need to start using the app to book?

From 1st July, all members must book via the app before attending a session, but feel free to start using it as soon as you download it!
Walk-ins without a booking will only be allowed if space permits and must book in via the app on arrival. Attendance is one of our requirements for promotion. We need an accurate record of attendance so you and/or your child can be promoted appropriately.

4. What happens if a class is full?

You can join the waitlist in the app.
If someone cancels, you’ll be notified and can take their place.

5. What if I need to cancel a booking?

If you can’t make a class:

  • Please cancel your booking in the app as soon as possible. If you don’t cancel (via our new app) before a class begins that has a waitlist, you may incur a £5 penalty.

  • We understand young children can be unpredictable and so we allow cancellations up until the class begins. However, we don’t want anyone to lose out on the chance to train if there is a spot, so we appreciate you cancelling with as much notice as possible.

  • The app will send you reminders for booked sessions to help avoid missed classes and penalty charges. (See ‘Should I enable reminders’ FAQ No. 9)

6. What if I try to cancel via the app and the app malfunctions/I do not have access

  • Our new MAAT app is specifically designed to make bookings and cancellations as easy as possible. In the unlikely event there is a problem, please get in touch via email, phone or in person to let us know you have to cancel. If you are in touch via phone and email, as long as your message is timestamped you will not be charged.

7. My membership doesn’t show in the app – what should I do?

  • Until memberships are fully migrated in mid-July, it may look like you don’t have an active membership.

  • When booking, click “Register anyway” to book your class.

  • Once the transfer is complete, your membership will show as active and without any warning.

8. Can I change the email address linked to my membership?

  • Yes — but you must let us know as soon as possible if you’d like to update your registered email to make a seamless transition.

9. Should I enable notifications from the app?

Yes, we recommend allowing app notifications to receive:

  • Booking reminders

  • Important training updates

10. I need help setting things up — can I get assistance?

Absolutely! You’re welcome to stop by reception — Will or Shanti will be happy to help you set it up.

11. What if I want to freeze my membership?

Please contact us directly via email. There’s a 20% charge of the monthly fee while your membership is frozen.
