What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

The word “jiu jitsu” derives from the Japanese “Jū” meaning “gentle” and “Jutsu” meaning “art”; so essentially, jiu jitsu is the “gentle art”.

BJJ is primarily a ground based martial art, which uses the principles of pressure, leverage and timing to non-violently submit one’s opponent. Jiu Jitsu focuses on ‘grappling’ techniques with the application of joint manipulations and chokes, and is akin to judo, wrestling, sambo. It was developed most notably by the Gracie family in Brazil, as a way for smaller, weaker fighters to control a larger opponent. It’s the groundwork seen in MMA.

Class Structure

Each coach has their own preferred style of warm up but generally speaking, we have 10-15 minutes of warm up movements or games, followed by technique, positional sparring and ‘free sparring’.

  • Positional sparring is a live round from a specific position working on attack or defence

  • Free sparring is where students ‘roll’ and work on their preferred game; these rounds are typically 5 minutes with 1 minute break.

Our experienced coaches adapt each class to the students depending on their level and individual needs.

We work on a two week rolling topic, e.g. for two weeks all our classes cover the closed guard position.

How much does it cost?

We are a community focused space and work to make memberships as affordable as possible without compromising on training quality or our facilities.

Whilst we like to train BJJ everyday, we know that doesn’t work for everyone’s schedules and training goals so we offer two adult memberships:

  • 8 classes a month for £90

  • Unlimited training for £115

  • Students get 10% off either adult membership

Curious? We offer all students a free trial class.
